Learn How to Stop Smoking

Ex-Smoker David – Father and Son

This article was submitted by David, it was a comment in our post Negative Side Effects of Stopping Smoking and it was published as a regular post, many thanks for sharing a wonderful heart touching story.

Hi [Everyone]

I’m 10 days in now, using NRT to ease out of the physical habits first. Telling you all the story of what made me quit will actually help me, and hopefully someone else……

4 weeks ago driving home from football training with my 14 year old son Tom.

Tom – “Dad, how old was your dad when he died?”

Me – “54 mate”

Tom ” you were 20 weren’t you?”

Me “erm, no I was 22”

Pauses for a minute…

Tom, genuine and sensibly “erm, Dad do you realize that I’ll be the same age as you were if you die at 54 too…..how did it feel when it happened dad?”

Me – “it was more awful than you can imagine mate…..what’s really on your mind son?”

I Look at Tom, a rough tough footballer, huge tears are rolling down his face…

Tom – “I don’t want you to die dad, it’d only be 8 years from now, I want you to see what I’m going to become…”

Overwhelmed by his plea I said ” Son, don’t worry, I have no plans on going anywhere, you worry about the things you can change, worry about enjoying your life and being the best you can be”

There’s another short pause….

Tom “I know dad, but you smoke and you CAN change that can’t you, please dad, I don’t want you to die”

When we arrived home I hugged him, me crying too I admit, told him that I love him and that what he’d said was the nicest, kindest thing anyone had ever said to me. We chose a date (my Birthday mid Feb) and I quit.

As a smoker you know the risks, you see the adverts aimed at helping you motivate to stop.

I wish someone had filmed the conversation in my car that night, it was real.

If I smoke again I should be ashamed of myself.

Thank you so much for sharing an awesome experience David. I firmly believe that this experience about Father and Son’s love for one another will help smokers out there to quit their addiction for good. Trust me nothing is far best than to become a non-smoker once again.

If you have any interesting story or any article geared in stopping nicotine addiction please read our submission guidelines if you want to share them, thank you.
