Learn How to Stop Smoking

Electronic Cigarettes are They Good or Bad

This post does not advocate the use or sale of Electronic Cigarettes, take note that e-cigarettes are not approved FDA nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), we only show our opinion and relevant facts coming from US FDA.

I’ve been hearing this electronic cigarette over and over, maybe 5 – 6 times a day in the radio. The advertisement emphasizes the continued enjoyment or pleasure of smoking without the smoke itself, meaning this electronic cigarette gives you a dose of nicotine when you inhale it (trust me not pleasure but misery). Great innovation I thought, but after making some online research, the results of what I found is quite disturbing. If you are trying to quit smoking, it means being free from nicotine addiction by cutting off the supply of nicotine in your body. Electronic cigarettes are not solution to your smoking problems, the psychological effects are still there and the money you will spend lavishly still goes to nothing. If you are thinking or wondering whether these electronic cigarettes are good or bad for your health keep on reading.

Nicotine Itself is Deadly

If you think you can have your kick or boost of nicotine without the deadly chemicals that accompany it when you inhale smoke in a cigarette or tobacco by using electronic cigarettes, you are wrong. Nicotine itself is very deadly not only is it addictive but it can give damaging and permanent affects to your body. When you use an electronic cigarette thinking you have gone away with the bad stuff brought by smoking think again. That same drug that you think is giving you the boost will be the one that’s going to take away your money, health and self-respect.

You won’t get away  from the psychological effects of nicotine addiction. You are still an addict, you will still feel irritable when situations deprive you from smoking. You will still feel that panic each time you run out of refills and what do you think will happen if refills are not available in your local grocery stores, then you will revert back to the usual old cigarette that you usually light up.

What FDA Has to Say?

For Immediate Release: July 22, 2009

FDA and Public Health Experts Warn About Electronic Cigarettes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that a laboratory analysis of electronic cigarette samples has found that they contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze.

Electronic cigarettes, also called “e-cigarettes,” are battery-operated devices that generally contain cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals. The electronic cigarette turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user.

These products are marketed and sold to young people and are readily available online and in shopping malls. In addition, these products do not contain any health warnings comparable to FDA-approved nicotine replacement products or conventional cigarettes. They are also available in different flavors, such as chocolate and mint, which may appeal to young people.

Good or Bad – What is Your Purpose?

If you are going to use electronic cigarette in quitting smoking like approved medicinal Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) like patches or gum, then I have nothing to say against it. I myself resorted to nicotine therapy the first few days before I finally quit cold turkey. By the way, E-cigs are not approved as medicinal NRT. But if you are going to use it to continue being an addict to nicotine, then you are no better than the ordinary smoker who lights up tobacco cigarettes. This blog is here to help you quit smoking and when we say quit smoking we mean quit the nicotine addiction and be free from the slavery of nicotine.

Just by reading the excerpt above (FDA), the answer to the question about electronic cigarettes being good or bad is pretty obvious, these stuff are bad for your health. Although depending on your purpose, if you are going to use them to help you quit, move on, keep on carrying your determination and desire to quit smoking for good. But if you will use them as an alternative, I guess it will all be the same.

Even if they can provide nicotine perfectly without the other deadly chemicals, will these electronic cigarettes become safe? The answer again is a big No No. Nicotine is not only an addictive substance, it also affects and damages major organs inside the body notwithstanding the negative psychological effects it gives. It is also a chemical used for insecticides and pesticides, can you imagine that? So if you think it is a good substitute, I don’t think so, rather than looking for “safe” substitute (which there will no be) do something to quit smoking.

Nicotine has enslaved you for so long, you’ve been an addict long enough and don’t you want to be free? Decide today, quit smoking and free yourself from nicotine addiction, we have done it and so can you. Read this article to help you quit smoking for good, What Happens When You Quit Smoking.

  1. The day I quit smoking I was able to purchase a nicotine free e-cig. The cartridges had zero nicotine in them and after some research found out the ingredients were 100% natural. I used it for 3 weeks before I was able to fully give up the physical hand-to-mouth movement. After 3 weeks I passed along my e-cig to a family member. I’m not saying the choice is healthy or regulated, but it was something that helped me finally give it up.

  2. Thank you so much for providing this support to those trying to improve their health as well as the health of those around them by quitting smoking. The e-cigarette fad, especially as it is marketed to young people, seems to me a dangerous and unhealthy alternative. As you state, it is indeed not a solution for those seeking to quit.
