This is a guest post coming from Matt.
People are smart and know that when they quit smoking they need to substitute their habit for something new. This might not be a conscious thought. Generally people find snacks to put in their mouths all day when they aren’t smoking, which leads to that post quitting weight gain. In psychological terms, this is the Substitution Strategy for Quitting Smoking, and whether you are aware or not, you will need to find some new healthy habit to replace smoking.
You don’t need to quit smoking, you just need learn a new response to your triggers to smoke. Even if you have smoked for years, you can quickly and easily replace your smoking habit with something else, it just takes a good, healthy substitute and sticking with it for a while.
The first step to breaking your bad habits is becoming aware of your triggers to smoke, which requires being aware of your smoking throughout the day. Keep a mental list so that you can be prepared with your substitute later on. When you quit smoking, your brain will automatically tell you it is time for a cigarette. If you are aware, these constant reminders can be retrained.
The best way to quit smoking is to replace cigarettes with a new healthy habit that does not involve nicotine or tobacco. The psychological addiction to cigarettes is just as powerful, if not more so for some people, as the physical addiction to nicotine. Smoking is a hand to mouth habit that most smokers do about 250 times a day. Smoking is a ritualized behavior that should be replaced by something healthy and mood enhancing.
The reasons people subconsciously use the Substitution Method of Quitting Smoking is that most people replace that hand to mouth habit with snack food. This is not a sustainable option and unhealthy. Eating raw vegetables, fruits and nuts, sipping on a healthy drink like herbal tea, and/or eating dark chocolate all help replace the hand to mouth habit.
By being conscious of your smoking, and sticking with doing something different every time you want a cigarette, you are retraining yourself to respond differently. If you used to smoke with coffee in the morning, or on the drive to work, plan on having something different at those times. Eventually your new habit will become the automatic response and you will forget all about smoking.
A product like Quit Tea is a herbal tea that helps you quit smoking by temporarily getting you through the cravings. And if you can stick with drinking it every time you crave a cigarette for a period of a few weeks, you can create a new healthy habit of drinking herbal tea.
